Thanks to HSHC, a grouping of fitness-related equipment known as a ""boot camp in-ground outside gym" designed for people ages 13-and-up was installed at Rutherford Park in western Houston.

As we enter the second half of 2018, the Texas County Health Department’s Healthy Schools Healthy Communities program (HSHC) wants to encourage you to get out and enjoy the fall weather with your children.

We have made so many changes to our parks to try and get our children in our communities more active. At Rutherford Park in western Houston, HSHC sponsored work-out equipment with pour-in-place rubber below it, a water bottle re-filling station and all-ability swings, and the city added a piece of playground equipment and installed it. HSHC partnered with the City of Houston because we want to make it easier for the whole family to get active together.

We have heard several stories from parents and grandparents about how they love being able to workout while watching their kids play on the playground equipment and swings. They also say they love having the water fountain at the park.

HSHC wants to thank the City of Houston for agreeing to keep the bathroom down there year round and paying for its maintenance.

HSHC sponsored a climbing wall and shade structure for Westside Park and the City of Houston grounds department installed them for free for the community.

Be looking for some new playground equipment coming to Emmett Kelly Park in the near future, which will be sponsored by HSHC and installed by the city grounds department. Houston is a very blessed town to have so many who care about the health of our children.

We hope to see you enjoying the parks and all the hard work brought to you by great partnerships.

Don’t forget to eat at least five servings of fruits and vegetables daily along with drinking half your body weight in ounces of water.

Wishing you a wonderful rest of 2018 from Healthy Schools Healthy Communities at the Texas County Health Department.

EARLENE STOOPS, HSHC
