Tammy Stell of the South Central Correctional Center at Licking describes a program that allows offenders at the institution to give back to the community. The presentation was Wednesday as part of the annual Missouri Community Betterment Contest judging. Houston won the grand prize among all communities last year.

Judges with the Missouri Community Betterment Contest were in Houston on Wednesday to judge the town’s progress during the last year. Houston won the grand prize in the competition last year.

The visit at the Melba Performing Arts Center allowed judges to learn about projects showcased by presenters.

Winners will be announced at the 55th annual Missouri Community Betterment Conference on Oct. 14-15 in Columbia. Missouri Gov. Mike Parson will present the awards on Monday, Oct. 15. Members of the Community Betterment and Arts Council of Houston and the youth organization will attend. Educational sessions and the awards competition highlight the event.

Wednesday’s program included presentations about everything from a wide array of events at the Melba Performing Arts Center since opening to major improvements at the chamber’s fairgrounds on North U.S. 63. A bus tour also was included.

Two judges, Donna Bell and Christel Gollnick, are visiting communities in similar size to Houston.
