Preventing childhood obesity starts with parents

Nearly one in three kids or teens in the U.S. are overweight or obese! Often we believe that a child will ‘out-grow’ their weight or that it will not affect them later in life, however that is not true. As Americans we are suspect to poor diets, lack of exercise, family factors, psychological factors, and socioeconomic factors which are setting our children up for a lifelong battle against obesity. Simple things as being busy and eating too much fast food or foods which are quick, such as frozen meals teach our children lessons that such foods are ok. In reality they are not. Compound these cheap fast meals with a lack of exercise and children becoming over weight is easy to understand.

Kids need exercise and to be taught and shown that fast fatty meals or sugar laden meals are bad. Make your child put down the phone or game console controller, turn off the television and get outside. Engage with your child in a fitness routine and healthy diet to prevent type 2 diabetes, asthma, sleep apnea, and psychological stress such as low self-esteem. Fitness and diet can stop these but it starts with you as a parent!

A child who feels better will do better in school, will be happier, and will be less likely to act out. Furthermore a healthy child is less likely to require hospital visits and will be better equipped to fend off illness. Let’s make the hard decision today to set our children up for success tomorrow.
