Mark Bechtel, of the Federal Transit Association, presents Houston’s Heather Sponsler, city clerk, with an award of excellence for increasing ridership on the city’s public bus system by 10 percent (or 1,378) riders between 2016 and 2017.

The City of Houston was recognized for increasing ridership on its bus system at the 2018 state conference and expo hosted by the Missouri Public Transit Association.

Houston received an “award of excellence” Oct. 1 as 1,378 more riders used the city’s public transportation system from 2016 to 2017. Heather Sponsler received the award for the city.

Other Missouri communities included: the City of Independence for an increase of 42 percent or 118,013 riders; Southeast Missouri State University for a 7 percent increase or 22,239 riders; and the City of El Dorado Springs Transit Service for a 10 percent increase or 1,102 riders. OATS Transit was presented with an Award of Recognition for increasing ridership by 78,278 riders.
