The SeniorAge Area Agency on Aging and the Houston Senior Center are ready to rake some leaves – that is, leaves from the “Giving Tree.”

The agencies are asking for the public’s help in raising $2,018 by year’s end to help fund meals for area senior citizens.

Anyone interested in contributing can stop by the Houston Senior Center in downtown Houston from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. weekdays and select a special leaf from the Giving Tree, and make a donation to help provide nutritious meals to seniors who cannot afford to make a personal contribution for their meals and service. Checks can be made payable to SeniorAge and dropped into the special donation box located under the tree.

“To put our goal in perspective, $2,018 would help the Houston Senior Center provide 575 meals to seniors who need our help with nutrition,” said senior center administrator Bernadine Hohlt. “These are folks who cannot enjoy a hot meal at the center among friends and those who cannot afford a contribution on their own.”

In 2017, SeniorAge provided more than one million meals to seniors throughout a 17-county area, including Texas County.

“In Houston alone, we served over 100 meals daily,” Hohlt said. “Your donations will help ensure our home diners continue receiving nutritious meals that help them remain at home and out of nursing facilities.”

The Houston Senior Center is at 301 S. Grand Ave. For more information, call Hohlt at 417-967-4119.

Donations can also be made online via the senior center’s Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/Houston-Senior-Center-1210693092327495/) or at www.senioragemo.org
