CHRISTOPHER L. HAWKINS

After attempting to elude a Summersville Police Department officer in a high-speed chase, a Houston man faces three charges, including a pair of felonies, authorities said.

Christopher L. Hawkins, 40, of 18147 Grandview Road at Houston, is charged with possession of a controlled substance and resisting or interfering with an arrest for a felony, and misdemeanor unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia.

According to a Summersville officer’s report, a call was received regarding a vehicle passing unsafely and moving erratically coming toward Summersville (on an unreported roadway). The officer responded and saw two vehicles traveling at high speeds, one gold and the other silver.

The officer activated his patrol car’s emergency equipment and reported seeing the gold vehicle move in behind the silver one in an apparent attempt to prevent a traffic stop of the silver vehicle. The officer continued pursuit, with speeds exceeding 100 miles per hour in a 45 miles per hour zone.

The officer reported that the pursuit lasted about 16 minutes and speeds averaged 75 miles per hour. While pursuing the gold vehicle on a gravel county road, the pursuit came near an Amish buggy that ran off the roadway and  appeared to be tipping, the officer said.

The vehicle finally pulled into a driveway on Highway K, and the driver – Hawkins – got out and was apprehended.

During a subsequent search of his vehicle, a black metal case was found that contained plastic bags of methamphetamine and marijuana “joints,” according to a report. A glass smoking device was also found with the meth.

Hawkins was taken to the Texas County Jail and is held on $200,000 bond.
