The Missouri Department of Conservation hosted a handgun workshop for women Sunday (Sept. 1) at the Big Piney Sportsman’s Club on Highway B east of Houston.
MDC outdoor skills specialist Travis Mills provided instruction at the event, which included 10 participants.
“There was a lot more interest than the 10 slots allowed,” Mills said.
The program included safety, operation and techniques of shooting both semi-automatic and revolver pistols. Equipment was provided to women who didn’t have their own, including guns, ammunition, targets and eye and ear protection.
One “coach” was provided for every two shooters.
“This was primarily about promoting shooting sports and emphasizing safety and general gun awareness,” Mills said. “I thought the program went great; the purpose was to assist these women to become better shooters and be more comfortable around handguns.”

After a short lecture session, the group practiced shooting at paper and steel targets. A “steel challenge” course was available to shoot after participants gained sufficient knowledge and build confidence during the class.
