The Houston board of education may get its first look at construction costs and architectural plans for a new gymnasium and other work as early as next week, it heard during a meeting Tuesday night.
Dr. Allen Moss, superintendent, said the construction manager, Gentry Construction Co. Inc. of Houston; and architect, Paragon Architectural, Springfield, are working on the presentation. Moss told the board that some advance work also is being examined, such as moving utilities and other services that will be in the path of the project. Some discussion also has occurred about a staging area for the work.
The project, approved by voters in April, includes construction of the gym and other improvements. Through a two-phase project, the middle school and Hiett Gymnasium would eventually connect.
In other matters, members:
•Discussed their recent attendance at a Missouri School Boards’ Association meeting, what they learned and how some of those observations could be incorporated at Houston. Houston also was represented through a student display highlighting STEM education.
•Learned that testing of the district’s new sawdust boiler system will be done later this month. Sawdust will be transported on location as the assessments begin, Moss said.
•Heard middle school principal Amanda Munson recognize middle school student of the month, Anna Gale, and other student of the month nominees: Ethan Branum, Addison Cook, Kayden Crawford, Kristen Ely, Katie Evans, Elliot Greiner, Kendal Johnson, Addison Neugebauer, Lilly Shelton, Ben Steelman and Fletcher Wilson. Gale and other nominees led in the Pledge of Allegiance.
•Approved bus routes for the 2019-2020 school year.
