The Houston School District has implemented a food program for students 18 and under beginning Tuesday (March 24).
Breakfast and lunch meals will be provided. Classes adjourned beginning last Wednesday because of the ongoing response to the coronavirus.
Superintendent Dr. Allen Moss said that for the rest of this week, parents may pick up meals for their children from 10 a.m. until noon at the normal Houston Elementary School drop-o /pick-up location or students may walk through the location for pickup as well.
But beginning Monday (March 30), meals for the entire week will be distributed on Mondays. Moss said the pickup times and location would be the same.
Regardless of where the children attend school, this option will be available at Houston. Raymondville and Success schools will also be offering similar services.
This is free to all students regardless of income guidelines and will be available at least through next week and will continue should the break be extended, Moss said.
Persons who are interested in this or plan to take advantage of this service should call their building at 417-967-3024 (elementary, middle school or high school) or ll out the Google form: COVID-19 Grab and Go Food For Families. (https://bit. ly/2JeNnOO).
Moss said it is important that an accurate count is available for meal preparation. Parents who have students in multiple buildings will need only to call one site.
ABOUT THE PROGRAM
This temporary program is being made possible through the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) and in partnership with the Houston R-1 School District. Eligible disabled adults over the age of 18 may also receive free meals at the school.
The district has received a special waiver to implement the SFSP during this closure; however, all meals will be “grab and go” to eliminate large groups of people congregating in one area.
All are asked to practice social distancing and follow CDC recommendations during pickup.
The district will also be working on future delivery methods to students unable to utilize the drive through.
“We ask that you be patient as we develop this process and make adjustments to accommodate the needs of as many children as we can,” Moss said. “Our hope is over the next week that we will have this system as streamlined as possible.”
