A member of the Texas County Memorial Hospital board of trustees has stepped down, following the dismissal of its chief executive officer Tuesday.

Steve Pierce, of Houston, has resigned with a little over a year remaining on his five-year term. Pierce was elected to the open position for the TCMH board of trustees after he won the race as a write-in candidate during the 2020 countywide election.

Pierce sent his official resignation to Dr. Jim Perry, board chair, Tuesday evening through email.

“My resignation from the board is what I believe to be in the best interest of both the organization and myself,” said Pierce.

“Over the past few months, I have found it increasingly challenging to fulfill the fiduciary responsibilities as a member of the board with the demands of my business and personal life.”

“I appreciate the support of the citizens of Texas County and the many great employees working at TCMH in allowing me to serve on the board for the past three plus years.”

The county commission — consisting of Scott Long, presiding commissioner; John Casey and Robert Ross — is responsible for appointing a new trustee to complete the term. The hospital will provide the commission with recommendations.

“We will work with the Texas County Commissioners to find the ideal candidate to lead the hospital and ensure a seamless transition effectively,” Bill Bridges, TCMH interim chief executive officer, said.

Remaining board members are Perry, Allan Branstetter, vice chair; Joleen Durham, secretary; and Ross Richardson.

Allan Branstetter’s seat on the board is up for election this April, with candidates George Sholtz and Jennifer Hugenot running. Branstetter and Chelsye Scantlin were disqualified in January due to late personal financial disclosure filings.
