A new chapter began at Texas County Memorial Hospital in Houston on Friday – the grand opening of its state-of-the-art surgical center.

The surgical center – located at 1333 S. Sam Houston Blvd. – is the only facility of its kind in a 50 mile radius. On Friday, March 29, several members of the community, staff and legislature attended a ribbon cutting and facility tour event to celebrate the new facility.

Strategic planning for the surgery center began in 2006, led by then CEO Wes Murray, the administrative team and board. In 2014, the Jayson Gentry Safe Room and the “shell” for the surgery center were completed. Now, 10 years later, the center is ready to open. Drs. Hollis Tidmore and John Harrington will operate out of the new facility.

“We are confident that the new surgery center will greatly enhance the delivery of crucial healthcare services to our patients,” Interim CEO Bill Bridges said. “It’s an incredible milestone that will bring long-lasting benefits to our rural community.

Thanks to funding from the USDA, Delta Regional Authority, state appropriations, South Central Ozarks Council of Governments, a community improvement district and donations from the community, the $3.7 million project has become a reality.

“I couldn’t be more pleased to join in celebrating this new surgical facility in partnership with Texas County Memorial Hospital,” said USDA Rural Development Missouri State Director Kyle Wilkens. “We treasure living and working in rural areas, but we know there can be healthcare infrastructure challenges. Today, however, marks one more step toward closing the book on rural healthcare disparities.”
