A project to build a new library for Houston in the downtown business district is showing progress.

The 7,200 square foot structure is being constructed atop the Houston Storm Shelter at Pine and First streets in Houston. The effort is a project of the Texas County Foundation, which supports the Texas County Library, a public entity that has branches at Cabool, Licking and Summersville.

The group went through application processes to raise the required money through grants and other allocations.

When the original shelter building was constructed, it was designed for an additional floor that would become the new home to the library. Sapp Design Architects of Springfield is the architect. Gentry Construction Co. Inc. is the contractor.

The new library includes 16 public-use computers, a special children’s area, a community meeting room, a business center with access to tools required by emerging businesses and the normal things persons would expect to find in a library. Completion is expected in 2025.

There are still remaining state tax credits available to benefit donors. Those qualifying receive 70 cents of every dollar donated as a credit on their state tax returns. The charitable donation also qualifies on federal returns. Learn more at: bit.ly/librarytaxcredits
