Law enforcement personnel and firefighters from several departments across Texas County competed in the annual “Siren Bowl” softball game last Saturday night at Tiger Field in Houston in an effort to raise money for the local “Shop with a Hero” program.
Shop with a Hero is an event that takes place each December where local first responders take underprivileged children shopping for Christmas presents.
This year’s softball game also featured a silent auction and concessions for fans. Both squads competed hard for 9 innings with law enforcement taking a 47-11 lead despite some very questionable calls by State Rep. Bennie Cook filling in as umpire for the game. However, with this game being a fundraiser, donations led to a change in the score as each team was allowed to add additional runs.
As the game headed to the bottom of the 9th inning, the firefighters trailed law enforcement 125-124. The firefighters then plated 2 runs in for walk-off 126-125 victory.
This event was made possible by the generous donations of many local businesses and individuals. The softball game and silent auction raised over $2,500 for Shop with a Hero. In addition to thanking those who donated, there were a number of people who volunteered their time to assist with the event
