Work by employees of Intercounty Electric Cooperative continues in Georgia after Hurricane Helena caused massive damage.

“Our crew is still in Georgia after being away from home for eight days now. But, their work is invaluable to the area residents and Intercounty is so proud of their dedication to electric cooperative members. We’re keeping them in our thoughts and prayers and encourage you to do so too,” said in a statement from Intercounty Electric Cooperative on Saturday.

As of Saturday morning, Little Ocmulgee EMC had 57% of its members back on. “Unfortunately, there is still weeks of work left to do in their area. Thanks to nearly 400 extra linemen from across the nation, including our Intercounty team, progress is continually being made,” Intercounty said in the statement.

Hurricane Helene has become one of the deadliest hurricanes in the United States, at least since the emergence of modern weather forecasting.

There have been at least 221 deaths in six states as a result of the storm, whose flooding, wind and storm surge inundated communities from the southeast to the southern Appalachians. It made landfall on Sept. 26. Many people may still be unaccounted for. Officials say they expect the death toll to rise as search and rescue efforts continue.
