The Nov. 19 meeting of the Cabool Art Club was held in the STARS Community Room and hosted by Vicki Woods with co-hostesses Shelley Travis, Gloria White and Carol Pettijohn.

Special guest speaker Dr. Sam Iverson presented a program featuring his artwork collected from several different places during his governmental work in Africa.

Dr. Iverson, a U.S. citizen by birth, was born and raised in Morocco and spent much of his 30-year career serving in military intelligence in U.S. embassies. With his fluency in English, French and Arabic, he worked in numerous countries and shared highlights of their history.   Much of the art he collected during his career is no longer to be found because of modernization and the impact of wars.

Even after Dr. Iverson’s retirement from military service; while working in the field of higher education, he was occasionally called back into foreign service when his expertise was needed. Members enjoyed inspecting the unique pieces such as ceremonial masks and intricate “desert rose” crystal formations created by sand as well as learning about his fascinating career and service.

Roll call was members sharing of a special foreign treasure item. Officer reports were given.

The primary topic of business was the Christmas Tree Raffle Scholarship fundraiser at the “Christmas on Main” event from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Dec. 7 in downtown Cabool.

Members adjourned to enjoy refreshments showcasing a specialty cake by Jana Dobson.  Members present were Kathy Anderson, Marie Beller, Pat Caywood, Joyce Jones, Rebecca Peterson, Carol Pettijohn, Vanetta Sponsler, Shelley Travis, Tracey Trettin and Vicki Woods.
