Houston Middle School 7th-graders Myles Copley and Oliver Choate both had significant success at the Cross County Coaches National Youth Championships Nov. 23 in Lexington, Kentucky.

Competing in the 11-12 age group, Copley finished 9th overall in a field of 265 runners and placed 7th among a total of 130 12-year-olds.

Running in the 13-14 age group, Choate placed 39th overall in a field of 223, and came in 19th among 130 13-year-olds.

The boys race covered about 4,000 meters and the girls spanned about 3,000 meters.

The two Houston athletes were competing with the Brocaw Blazers, a team based in the Kansas City area. The meet featured racing in five age groups, with runners ranging from 6 to 18 years old. Copley and Choate helped the Blazers take first place in their respective races, and the squad won in other age groups as well.

Copley and Choate won state championships on Oct. 26 by winning their races at the 2024 Missouri Middle School State Championships in Wheatland.
