An area licensed charity that helps rescue dogs and cats is asking the Texas County Sheriff’s Department to investigate the death of a dog that died after apparently ingesting methamphetamine.
Ozarks Pet Rescue said the adopted dog, Twyz, was among those sent to a veterinarian for routine health certificates and rabies vaccinations before being taken by another rescue.
The local rescue said someone took the dog home that night and Ozarks Pet Rescue would pick Twyz up the next morning at 6 for transport to another rescue.
But by 4:50 p.m., Ozark Pet Rescue received a text that the dog was suffering from seizures. The dog returned to the veterinarian where X-rays showed something had been ingested and was in the dog’s stomach.
The dog was later put down, but an autopsy showed the dog died from an overdose of meth and the contents in the stomach were aluminum foil that contained a cut straw, pills and remaining meth that hadn’t been absorbed into the body.
Ozarks Pet Rescue said it notified the county sheriff’s department of the death, and hopes the Texas County prosecutor will file felony animal neglect and abuse charges.
“Twyz [’s] death could have been avoided and yes we are angry and mad and sad all at same time!” Ozark Pet Rescue said in a statement.
