The Rolla School District is reviewing damage to its facilities to see when classes might resume after a tornado ripped through the community on Friday night, it said.

Damage is extensive through parts of the community.

On Sunday morning, Intercounty Electric Association was showing about 2,100 of its customers without service there at about 6:40 a.m. Rolla Municipal Utilities has 556 without power, according to hometowngrid.com/rolla.

Both have worked since the storm to restore power and have made big strides. Additional crews also have assisted.

Rolla School District issues update

Thank you all for your support as we have worked to assess the storm damage across the district. Many of you have reached out asking how you can help and we appreciate you. Right now, we hope you are focusing on your friends and neighbors as they work to clean up and rebuild.

Here are a few things we’ve learned today as we’ve worked through properties around the district:

  • Some of our buildings have significant structural damage. We have meetings scheduled Sunday with our engineering team to learn more about the extent.
  • Most of our buildings do not have power, making it challenging to begin the cleanup efforts.
  • Further, we have insurance requirements that will have to be met before we can start to repair and clean. We will let you know when there are opportunities for volunteers to help with cleanup.
  • The power outage has wiped out our food supply. While we know crews are working tirelessly, we do not yet have a timeline for power restoration.

We know you are anxious to learn about plans for the upcoming week. We will send out another message tomorrow with more details. Thank you for your patience. Please continue to stay away from school buildings and properties. We know you are all concerned, but there are unsafe conditions across the district and we do not want anyone to get injured.

Please continue to care for yourselves and your families, as we understand many of you have experienced significant losses due to the severe weather. We are proud to be part of this community and appreciate the kindness we’ve seen displayed during this difficult time.

Thank you,

Dr. Kyle Dare
