A search for two lost hikers in northwest Texas County ended successfully Friday night, the Roby Fire Department reported.
The males — around 20 years of age — and a dog had camped the night before. No one had heard from them since about 11:30 a.m. Saturday, and their phones ran out of power.
Several agencies participated after the call was received at about 8 p.m.: The Roby Fire Department joined the effort from the north and Nebo volunteers from the south. The Texas County Sheriff’s Department assisted with a drone.
“We mobilized a larger team due to how deep in the forest their last known location was and due to the potential for severe weather last night. We were not sure if there were any injuries. We did not want them stranded in those possible weather conditions,” according to a statement from the Roby Fire Department.
The Roby Fire Department said teams went in and about 10 minutes later the lost men popped up on a road a few miles away. Rescuers staged at Big Piney Campground. (That was the north side) Nebo Falcon was coming in from Roby Lake.
A Roby firefighter picked them up and took them to a vehicle, which had been found earlier.
