The City of Houston will host an Emmett Kelly Look-a-like Contest for area children at the Festival on April 26.

Emmett Kelly developed the character of “Weary Willie” while working for the Barnum and Bailey Circus. “Weary Willie” was created from Emmett’s childhood remembrance of the hobos who traveled on the train through Texas during the Great Depression.

“We encourage our kids to get involved and enjoy clowning at our festival. This is such a fun activity to add to our festival this year,” remarked Brenda Senter, festival coordinator.

Kids should register at the Grand Stage Table before 10:30 a.m. on the morning of the Festival and then are encouraged to walk in the parade which lines up at 10:50 a.m. at Walnut and Grand.

The judging takes place at the Clown Competitions after the parade from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the stage on Grand and Pine.

The judging will be on the best Emmett Look-a-like, character and humor in two age categories. There will be a cash gift for the best from ages 5-12 and ages 13-19.
