Texas County Memorial Hospital recently announced that Christian Neal, a certified nursing assistant (CNA) in its medical-surgical department, is the 2025 Sunflower Award recipient at TCMH.

The Sunflower Award at TCMH is an annual award that recognizes CNAs, emergency department technicians and surgical technicians who demonstrate outstanding service and compassion while exemplifying TCMH’s mission of excellence in a non-nursing role.

TCMH staff members Haley Beavers, med-surg CNA; Christian Neal, med-surg CNA; Liliana Amick, med-surg CNA; Jennifer Hack, med-surg CNA; Taylor Burch, emergency department tech; Bonnie Evans, med-surg CNA; Kassie Rogers, med-surg CNA; and Cynthia Robinson, med-surg CNA were all nominated for the Sunflower Award. Each nominee was honored with a special recognition.

“All of our nominees are fantastic non-nursing staff members who truly shine as role models in our caregiving community,” Courtney Owens, TCMH chief nursing officer, said. “The Sunflower Award is the highest form of recognition for a non-nursing role at TCMH.”

Neal, of Raymondville, has worked at TCMH since December 2024. Owens presented the award to him.

“I want to express my gratitude to everyone who submitted nominations and recognized the outstanding work of our CNAs and emergency room technicians at TCMH. Their dedication and efforts truly enhance the exceptional experience we provide here.” Owens said.

Neal received the award for being nominated twice, once by Robin, a TCMH patient, and by Debbie, a TCMH patient’s wife.

In the first nomination, Robin praised Christian for his exceptional people skills and care.

“Christian was very helpful and friendly during my admission to the medical-surgical unit,” Robin said. “He communicated effectively with his co-workers and showed respect not only for me but also for them. He was prompt in completing any tasks assigned to him. Christian made my experience at TCMH very pleasant.”

In the second nomination, Debbie applauded Christian for the exceptional care he provided for her husband and mother.

“Christian went above and beyond for my husband during his hospital stay, as well as for my mom while she was here,” Debbie said. “He is always willing to do whatever is needed, asks questions and consistently checks on both my husband and my mom. We are very pleased with the care he has provided.”

“Christian’s dedication and kindness as a CNA really shine through in the way he cares for our patients,” said Shelly Hawkins, TCMH medical-surgical director. “His contributions to our medical-surgical department are truly invaluable, and he absolutely deserves this award!”

Neal received a special recognition certificate, a sunflower pin and a bouquet of fresh sunflowers.

Nominations for the Sunflower Award are accepted year-round from patients, family members and colleagues. Award winners are selected and recognized annually.
