American Legion Post 41 has recently acquired a new booklet: “Let’s Be Right On Flag Etiquette,” that goes into detail about the proper use and display of the United States Flag.

Sections of the booklet are display and use of the flag by civilians, time and occasions for display, position and manner of display, conduct during hoisting, lowering or passing of the flag, use of the flag for parades and outdoor events. There is even a section to debunk flag myths. This booklet is available at no charge, and can be obtained at Post 41’s monthly meeting or our executive meeting every Wednesday at 0900, or by contacting a member.

The non-commissioned officer’s mantra for any occasion is as follows:

“Being late for any meeting is unacceptable. Being right on time is barely acceptable (it means being the last to arrive.) It’s better to be early, but it’s always best to be the FIRST to arrive!

Petty officers in the Navy and sergeants in the Army and Marines learn this mantra early in their careers, but it also applies to commissioned officers in all services and leaders in any civilian setting. On the USS Quapaw as a Navy PO-1, the mantra served me well while conducting crew-muster at 0700 each day, and later as Acting Operations Officer attending Officers Call at 0630. Never be late!
