In its latest efforts to address a dilapidated track on campus, Houston Schools received three responses from its request for qualifications. The deadline was Friday.
Dr. Justin Copley, superintendent, said Byrne & Jones Sports Construction, GeoSurfaces and Mammoth Sports Construction LLC, submitted proposals to the district. He said he anticipates the board of education will meet during a work session to continue the discussion. A date has not been scheduled at this time.
“From here, the plan is to work on a tabulation process that will inform the board of education in their next decision(s),” Copley said.
The district’s most recent effort to construct a new track was a $1.5 million state appropriation that received approval from the Missouri General Assembly but was vetoed in late June by Gov. Mike Kehoe.
In the spring of 2024, the district sought a $3 million no levy increase bond issue that received majority support (54.84 percent) from the community but failed to reach the 57.14 percent threshold to pass. GeoSurfaces was the project manager.
Copley previously said the board must determine the scope of the track project. Details to be decided include the number of lanes and type of surface. Whether the football field will be affected is yet to be determined.
“We’re trying to keep the momentum going,” Copley said in August. “I hope people continue to remain patient as we continue our efforts. We’re making progress in a lot of areas.”
