Utility outages will appear on this map generated by the new system.

The City of Houston announced Monday that it had launched a new system to report and monitor electrical outages.

The service — Hometown Grid — was approved at the Houston City Council’s Oct. 7 meeting.

Persons can text or call 877-695-3348 to report an outage. The city explained customers will receive an instant confirmation and quick follow-up questions.

The system gives residents clear updates when electrical outages occur and provides repair crews the tools to act quickly. Customers will file an outage report by telephone rather than take resources away from city staff or Texas County 911, who answer the calls. Persons with special needs — such as healthcare equipment in the home — will receive priority repair service.
