Due to a halt in Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits and food stamp distributions for November, local organizations say the need for food assistance in Texas County is expected to rise sharply.
Two groups – the Houston Senior Center and the Texas County Food Pantry – are stepping up to meet the demand and are asking for community help.
“We’re sending out a 911 to our community,” said Laura Crowley of the Texas County Food Pantry. “Your donations of shelf-stable food – boxed or canned, unopened and in-date – are urgently needed.”
The Houston Senior Center serves hot meals from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Suggested contributions are $4 for individuals age 60 and older and their spouses, and $8 for others. The center also delivers frozen meals to homebound seniors.
Since Nov. 1, 2024, the center has provided more than 18,500 meals through its dining, carryout, guest and frozen meal programs.
“The need is rising, and we’re committed to continuing this service with your support,” said Stephania Roeder, Houston Senior Center director.
The Texas County Food Pantry assists about 400 families each month, but with the suspension of SNAP benefits, staff expect demand to increase significantly through the end of the year.
“We’re a supplemental food resource,” Crowley said. “We can’t meet a family’s full monthly food needs – but together, we can close the gap.”
Food donations will be split equally between the two organizations. Items may be dropped off at the following locations:
- Texas County Food Pantry
- Forbes Pharmacy
- Simmons Bank
- Hometown Barber Shop
- Crowley’s HomeWorks
- The Bank of Houston
- West Plains Bank
- Houston Veterinary Hospital
- Debo’s Hardware
- Mean Muggin Coffee Bar
- Houston Senior Center
