Cabool Art Club members enjoying a program on the history of Mardi Gras put on by Tracey Trettin.

The Feb. 17, 2026 meeting of Cabool Art Club was held at the Methodist Church with Vicki Woods and Gloria White as hosts.

An interesting program on the history and rich cultural traditions of Mardi Gras was presented by Tracey Trettin. The first documented celebration in what is now the United States occurred in the late 1600s.

In the 1800s, social organizations called “Krewes” began planning and hosting the extravagant parades and floats we see today. Mardi Gras is celebrated around the world and is synonymous with parades, colorful beads and music ranging from brass band bangers to soulful jazz, reflecting a diverse melting pot of ethnicity and blend of faith, tradition and celebration before the observance of Lent begins.

Roll Call was each member naming a favorite American song.

The business meeting was called to order by President Shelley Travis and proceeded with discussion of the nominees for officers and committee chairpersons for the upcoming 2026-2027 year. Marie Beller gave the treasurer’s report and Felicia Ellis gave the report from the January planning meeting.

A motion was approved to wait until later in the year to further address possible fundraising needs.

A motion was approved to name the Art Club Scholarship the “Joyce Jones Arts Scholarship presented by Cabool Art Club.”

Several Art Club members will be attending the Southwest Missouri Museum Associates’ (SMMA) annual Honors and Extension Luncheon at Twin Oaks Country Club in Springfield on March 25.

The Cabool Art Club is excited to continue celebrating America’s 250th birthday and make a difference in the community. Everyone is invited to visit the Art Club Scholarship fundraising booth at the Cranberry Merchant at 510 Main St. in Cabool, Tuesday through Saturday.

The next meeting is at 1 p.m. Tuesday, March 17, at the Christian Church. All women are welcome to join this organization to promote the fine arts.
