The Houston City Council will draft an ordinance to allow firework sales and use inside city limits after a Tuesday meeting decision.
The ordinance will mirror Cabool’s, with minor changes. A sale window will exist from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. June 20 to July 10 for commercial or industrial zoned property, with use allowed from 10 a.m. to midnight July 4. The fire chief can suspend firework use based on conditions.
“Who you’re going to get complaints from are those who have pets,” said Ward III Alderman Don Romines. “Be prepared. We have to do what’s best for our community as a whole.”
Council members expressed a desire to ensure firework sales and use are safe, regulated and provide a variety of options for city residents.
“We can also generate a little revenue from the sales tax,” said Romines.
A sale and use period for New Year’s Eve was also discussed, but no action was taken. An after-action report is expected in late July.
