The Houston City Council worked on nuisance properties and an updated fireworks ordinance during its Monday meeting.

The council selected Smith Hauling & Excavating to demolish 405 Phelps St. (the old Houston Mill) for $25,500. The company did the most recent demolition, at 304 Pine St., and it was stated that it did a good job.

Before the unanimous vote was passed, Ward III Alderman Don Romines asked Larry Tyrrell, city attorney, if he believed the council followed the proper steps.

Tyrrell stated that he believes the proper procedures have been taken, including remediation periods, notices, bidding and other ordinance-based requirements.

The council also voted to go out to bid for demolition of a property at 216 Mill St. west of OK Tire.
