Joe Henry York passed away peacefully on May 26, 2026, at the age of 86. Born on Aug. 16, 1939, in St. Louis, Missouri, Joe was the cherished son of the late Joseph and Nora York, and a devoted brother to his sisters Fern, Ruby, Marie, Madine and Judy.

Joe was a gifted musician. He filled his days with the strumming of his guitar and the soul-stirring sounds of his steel guitar. His passion for music was not only his vocation but his solace, bringing him joy and companionship through the many bands he played with over the years. Joe’s music touched countless lives, leaving an enduring legacy of friendships and unforgettable performances.

On July 17, 1965, Joe married the love of his life, Melba Littrell. Together, they built a life full of love and laughter, enduring the ups and downs of life together, sharing 60 years of marriage. Their union was blessed with a daughter, Kelly, who, along with her husband, Mike Vernon, brought joy to Joe’s life. 

Joe’s legacy continues through his grandson, Dennis and wife Hannah Collins, and granddaughter Cora and husband Cody Turnbull. He was a proud great-grandfather to Waylon Collins, Emily Turnbull and Hailey Turnbull, who will carry forward the stories of his life and love.

He leaves behind a family who loved him, including numerous nieces and nephews. His musical friends will always remember the great memories they shared with “Yogi” over the years. Though his parents and sisters have gone before him, Joe’s memory will forever be a guiding light for those he leaves behind.

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Willow Care Nursing Home for their unwavering support and compassionate care in Joe’s final days. Their kindness provided comfort and peace to both Joe and his family during this poignant time.

Joe Henry York’s life was a testament to the power of love, music and family. Though his presence will be dearly missed, the echoes of his laughter and the beauty of his music will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew him.

A celebration of Joe’s life will be held at 1 p.m. June 14, 2026, at “The Shed” located at 6489 Highway Z in Houston. Family and friends will gather to honor the rich legacy of a man who brought joy and music to the world.
