MoDOT is conducting a traffic study on a busy Houston highway.

The Missouri Department of Transportation is undertaking a study of South Sam Houston Blvd. though Houston as it determines a path for improvements on the busy stretch of highway.

Chris Rutledge, assistant district engineer who works from Willow Springs, outlined a review of the highway that will include counting vehicles, studying turning patterns, lighting and curbs. The project is already under way, Rutledge told the Houston City Council on Monday night. MoDOT had earlier had planned paving improvements, but decided that the comprehensive review was warranted.

One item that will receive study is the possibility of two north and south lanes and turning lanes through some stretches of the highway. City Administrator Larry Sutton that while MoDOT says the lanes would be somewhat narrower, the possibility exists and mimics roadway done earlier with U.S. 63 through Rolla. That solution has appeal to city leaders and would eliminate any questions about the affects of a bypass at some point.

Ultimately, the Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission would review and decide the issue.

In other matters, the council:

—Is seeking bids for construction of new hangars at the Houston Memorial Airport. Depending on the outcome, six to 10 units are expected to be built.

—Learned a project to upgrade the tree population in Emmett Kelly Park has begun.

—Heard that Licking developer Jim Friend will soon begin construction of the first what is hoped to be several high energy efficiency homes on Nichols Street off Oak Hill Drive. The three-bedroom, two bathroom homes will feature 6-inch walls, extra insulation and energy-efficient heating and cooling, as well as appliances.

Another housing effort at Holder Drive and North Industrial Drive was denied housing tax credits under a state project recently.

—Discussed a faulty pump at the city’s wastewater treatment plant and the need for repairs.

—Will study the availability of DNR funds for water improvements, such as another well and tower for industry prospects.
